Yasmin Awan, 22, has hit the headlines for working in the coolest job role known to man- a full-time mermaid. Yasmin, a medical student at the University of Sheffield, earns up to £100 per hour performing at pool and land parties. This can include spending her time free diving or educating children about the importance of marine conservation.
Yasmin stated that her mer-journey began when she saw an advert for mermaid camp:
“I first discovered that you could become a mermaid when I saw an advert for mermaid camp.
“It really intrigued me and I thought it could be a lot of fun.”
Yasmin further explained the rigorous training she endured to become a fully-fledged mermaid:
“We were taught to free dive which is underwater diving that relies on the diver’s ability to hold their breath rather than the use of any equipment like scuba.”
The job was initially just a result of Yasmin’s curiosity, but now she claims she’s hooked:
“It all started off as a bit of fun but it blossomed into a business opportunity.
“I’m a child at heart – and who doesn’t want to be to be a mermaid?
“To me, it’s so much more than a job, I love working with children and seeing me dressed up as a ‘real-life’ mermaid makes them so happy.”
However, the role doesn’t come without its perils. Yasmin explained the importance of knowing exactly who’s hiring you:
“The company I work for has to be careful who we agree to host parties for.
“The job does attract some weird types that are known as ‘merverts’ who see mermaids as a sexual fantasy.
“We also get some backlash that we are buying into the fantasy but really we all just love entertaining at kid’s parties.”
But Yasmin hit back at critics, claiming:
“Initially people think it’s a bit bonkers.
“But I plan to do this until I haven’t got time to do it anymore.”
