Call the press, hold the phone, log out of Facebook and listen up- Alan Partridge is returning to the BBC. Boy, is he back with a vengeance.
The iconic character who stole the hearts and minds of Brits nationwide in his 1990s sitcom Aha! Alan Partridge and Knowing Me, Knowing You is back with a whole new take on the character. Alan is, of course, renowned for his radio personality and extreme diva-like tendencies (especially for that of a local celeb). However, in the new series Partridge returns as a TV star, having been given a final career lifeline by the BBC. The basis of the new series is that Alan has been brought in as a temporary host for a The One Show meets Newsround-esque current affairs show. Steve Coogan, writer, creator and actor of Alan Partridge, has said that the show will discuss modern issues such as Brexit.
The original Alan Partridge sitcom was created in 1991, so this new spin ‘This time with Alan Partridge’ promises to modernise an old classic. In an interview with The Radio Times, Steve Coogan said “It’s interesting bringing Alan back to the BBC, which is where he was born as a concept.” Coogan added, “The BBC is what Alan always wanted to be, and in making the narrative work in a logical sense, Alan is a creature of the BBC.”
When asked what the main theme of the show would be, collaborator Rob Gibbons added, “the question is whether he can sink his claws into this job and hold onto it? You’ve got to doubt it.”
Fans are overjoyed at the news of their favorite character’s return to the telly. Tom, 21, studying Politics at York told Student Life Guide, “This makes me very, very happy. I grew up watching Alan and adopted 99% of my humour from him. I can’t wait to see what Coogan has in store for him this time.”
The show is scheduled to return this Spring (2018), although an official date has not been set yet.
